Thank you City Council!

The NYC Community Compost Network would like to thank the New York City Council for committing funding to Community Composting in fiscal year 2025 (FY25), which runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.

Funding for community composting, including the NYC Compost Project, was eliminated by the mayor effective January 2024. The City Council preserved and expanded funding to community composting organizations for FY25, including BIPOC-centered organizations. In total, 14 organizations have received a total of $6.2 million* (.0057% of the total $109.4 billion budget) in City funding to bring the NYC Community Compost Network to life. Funding for the fiscal year 2026 is undetermined for the moment.

Community Composting is essential. It provides a localized, sustainable way for communities to be empowered by managing our own waste, to revitalize our city’s soil and ecology. It also brings environmental justice to underserved communities across the five boroughs.
