Farms!

The mission of East New York Farms! is to organize youth and adults to address food justice in our community by promoting local sustainable agriculture, in operation since 1998.

Goals:
Collection & Processing

  • Accept and process ~7,000 lbs of organics in East NY

  • Staff and coordinate Food Scrap Drop Offs at:

    • 2 local Farmers Markets

    • 2 Urban Farms

  • Staff and coordinate local food scrap hauling using e-bike and trailer

    • 2+ community-based organizations

    • 2+ local businesses

Distribution

  • Coordinate local deliveries of compost and clean soil to local community gardens

  • Prepare, bag and distribute and/or apply finished compost and clean soil locally

    • Host 3 seasonal Compost Givebacks and 2 seasonal Clean Soil Distributions

Outreach & Education

  • Train and engage 3 youth for Compost-specific internship as a part of a larger 30 youth internship program

    • Youth interns learn to support general operations, deliver compost education to community members, and act as compost program ambassadors.

  • Lead community workshops and engagements for community members

    • Provide support to local community partners through labor and technical assistance, supplies, garden support, and data collection

    • Outreach events, tabling, and programming

  • Community street tree care events

  • Lead volunteers, non-profit, school and youth groups through hands-on learning
