Master Composter Certficate Course

About:

The Master Composter Certificate Course educates and empowers New Yorkers to get involved in community composting via education, outreach, advocacy and more. This advanced education and outreach program is open to New Yorkers who are at least 18 years of age. We are grateful that funding for this program was restored for FY25 from the City Council. Currently funding is through June 30, 2025.

The Master Composter Certificate Course workshops, field trips, and volunteer opportunities are led by many community composting organizations around the five boroughs of NYC and you can participate in activities at a variety of locations.

The LES Ecology Center administers the program in close coordination with the other organizations. Current workshop instructors include Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, Lower East Side Ecology Center, NYBG Bronx Green Up and Big Reuse.

Certification Requirements:

To become a Certified NYC Master Composter, participants need to create an account on Regpack via the Registration page. An important note if you access the site on a phone: the “Register” page will likely only show you the Regpack site; to view the list of other options and full web page, view the “Desktop Site” on your phone. (To do this, when you are on the website, go to the 3 dots in the corner and Select Desktop Site)

Completion of Two (2) Field Trips

Make two guided visits to various sized compost sites throughout the five boroughs, register here.

Completion of Nine (9) Service Hours

Support compost-related activities at sites around the city. All volunteer activities need to be approved listings to count towards certification. If you'd like to volunteer with a site doing composting work that’s not listed on the website, please contact the course administrator at mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org.

You can dedicate all nine hours to one of the Tracks listed below and earn a Badge in that area or you can fulfill hours across the Tracks for a general service hours requirement fulfillment:

  • Civic Engagement (includes tabling, community outreach and food scrap collection)

  • Organics Processing (includes hands on organics processing, compost sifting and bagging)

  • Stewardship (applying compost in order to improve urban ecology)

  • Compost Infrastructure (includes building wooden, heavy duty plastic and metal bins, building sifters)

You can choose to complete more than one Track, however, a minimum of nine hours in each Track is required to receive that specific Badge.

FAQs

  • Only interested in learning about the science of decomposition? Or how to use compost? Can't quite commit to the full Master Composter course at the moment?

That's OK! While we hope that you'll complete the course in full, the workshops comprising the Master Composter Certificate Course can be taken as individual workshops in any order at any host site.

  • If you took one or more workshops in 2022/2023, the following titles count towards the new required titles listed below:

    • Composting 101 is now Intro to Composting

    • Soil and Decomposition Science is now Soil Health and Soil Science

    • Using Compost, Mulch and Cover Crops is now Caring for Soils with Compost, Mulch, and Cover Crops

    • Composting Systems and Tools is now Systems, Tools, and Scales

    • Site Design and Management is now Designing and Managing Community Compost Spaces

    • Reaching and Teaching Others is now Compost Advocacy & Community-Building

    • DSNY Organics Diversion Efforts is no longer required. If you took DSNY Organics Diversion Efforts, that's great! That will count as a credit and you will not be required to take Compost in Context. We do, however, strongly encourage you to take this new workshop!

If you completed any field trips and/or volunteer hours / service hours, those will count one for one towards the new requirements. For example, if you completed one field trip in 2022/2023, you need to complete only one more in 2025. If you completed 3 volunteer hours (now called Service Hours), that would count for 3 Service Hours and you would need 6 more Service Hours to complete the requirement. If you would like to earn a Badge and have past credit hours, please email mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org to confirm which Track your past hours would count for.

  • Future Master Composters are encouraged to use the Self Tracking Checklist to keep track of their progress.

If you were still active in the course in December 2023, you should have received an email from MC Admin summarizing your status on January 12, 2024 around 3pm. If you need more details on your current status, please contact the course administrator at mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org.

You can track your progress by logging into Regpack and checking your completed events. If you find any discrepancies, please contact mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org.

If you took one or more workshops in 2022/2023, the following titles count towards the new required titles listed below:

  • We have received a very positive response on the return of the Master Composter Certificate Course, and events do fill up quickly.

At this moment, only registered attendees will be allowed to participate in the corresponding event, so please make sure to register in advance.

In cases where an event is sold out, make sure to check back often for new listings and last-minute openings due to cancellations from your fellow future Master Composters. Keep in mind that registration usually closes 12-24 hours before the start of most events.

Sign up for our (usually) weekly newsletter to receive updates!

  • Please note that as of this writing, the course is currently funded through June 30, 2025 and given the uncertainty of program funding starting in July 2025, we cannot guarantee that this course will be offered after June, though we hope it will continue! We encourage you to complete coursework sooner than later (by June 1 if possible for administrative purposes).

You can track your progress by logging into Regpack and checking your completed events. If you find any discrepancies, please contact the course administrator at mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org.

  • If you would like to volunteer with a community garden or similar site doing composting work, please contact the course administrator at mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org to confirm the activity fits into the course guidelines.  Please note, as of this writing, due to program funding through June 30, 2025. Service Hours for 2025 credit will need to be completed between January 6 and June 1, 2025.

  • The Master Composter Certificate Course is offered completely free of charge to participants, thanks to community composting funding from the New York City Council for FY25 (July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025). Current funding ends on June 30, 2025 but we do hope funding will continue for FY26.

  • We are committed to making the Master Composter program accessible to anyone who is interested in getting certified. However, several of the urban gardens where Master Composter activities are facilitated are not wheelchair accessible due to space constraints, stairs, and unpaved walkways. For site-specific access Information about field-trips, workshops, or volunteer opportunities, visit the opportunity's registration page. If you have questions or concerns about the accessibility of a Master Composter activity, please contact the activity’s host or the course administrator at mastercomposteradmin@lesecologycenter.org
