Since 1987, the mission of the LES Ecology Center has been to pioneer community-based models in urban sustainability by offering unique e-waste and composting services, environmental stewardship opportunities, and educational programming to all New Yorkers.

Goals: 

Collection & Processing

• Planning for the compost yard in East River Park, completion 2026

• Build out of Canarsie $1.9 Mill needed to hire a general contractor 

• Maintain at least six food scrap drop off sites in Manhattan, collecting 630,000 pounds of materials/year

Hauling

• Haul food scraps from drop off locations and partner organizations in Manhattan to compost facilities

Outreach & Education

• Support community groups with technical support, such as training, compost system build outs, etc

• Distribute finished compost to community groups

• Carry out compost application workshops

• Master Composter Program administration and teaching MC workshops

• Outreach and education for roll out of curbside program in Manhattan
